The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.

We are recruiting:

Job Title: Traineeships in the Unit for Protection of the Civilian Population

Purpose

  • The associate will contribute to the work of the Protection of Civilian Population (PCP) Unit, which provides expertise as a pool of specialists within the Central Tracing Agency and Protection and Assistance Programmes, supports delegations in the field, and sets the methodology for enhancing protection for civilian populations in armed conflict or violence.

There are three associate positions available to focus on the following thematics: 

  • Migration (100%) – (start date: 23 April 2020);
  • PCP Strategies/Methodologies (50%) and Child Protection (50%) – (start date: 5 May 2020);
  • Community-based protection (50%) and Internal displacement (50%) – (start date: 23 May 2020).

The associate will provide support to the unit’s work on these specific files, forming a team with the advisors leading these files, and will have opportunities to autonomously develop and implement projects. S/he will gain an in depth understanding of protection work.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

In the PCP unit, Associates are expected to:

  • Assist the specific advisor to support and orient field delegations on operationalizing the file, especially to integrate new developments and fine-tune a response taking into account contextual dilemmas.
  • Assist with the monitoring of PCP-related developments and activities in priority operational contexts, to ensure strategies are developed effectively and to take stock of current practices for sharing of best-practices.
  • Assist in finalizing guidelines and training materials on methodologies and practices linked to the protection of civilians.
  • Provide summaries of external reports and contribute to reports for promoting protection concepts internally.
  • Support the Unit with different stages of project development.
  • Update relevant communication platforms, such as internal and external webpage or communities of practice tools. 
  • Assist with the preparation of and reporting on internal and external meetings and events.
  • Provide other logistical and administrative coordination support for the Unit.

Professional Experience required

  • Applicants should have a maximum one year relevant work experience (on a paid contract) following their last degree.

Desired profile and skills

  • University Degree (ideally in international humanitarian law, human rights, humanitarian action, international relations, gender studies, migration, political or social sciences, etc.). Masters an asset.
  • Fluency (oral and written) in English, and a basic understanding of French. Another language is an asset (especially Spanish, Arabic or Russian).
  • Demonstrated interest in protection work. Experience with an organization working on issues related to protection of civilian population in the conduct of hostilities, community-based programming, internal displacement, child protection, migration, gender and diversity, or sexual violence is an asset.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in protection, including in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and synthesize information.
  • Experience with drafting and editing reports, position papers, press releases, etc.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely (written and oral).
  • Comfortable working in a team, good interpersonal skills.
  • Good level of autonomy/independence in managing work.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Experience with information management tools such as Sharepoint, and skills for producing content on internet/intranet purposes.
  • Experience with a National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society is an asset.
